Spread across an area of 7000 square kilometers is the isolated Buddhist valley named Zanskar. The Zanskar Valley is approximately 300 Kilometers long and surrounded with Himalayan and Zanskar range. The tri-armed Ladakh valley formed by the mountain ranges is adorned with Zanskar River, deep gorges, and high rise ranges. Some Facts & Information of Zanskar Valley :-

  • This valley in Ladakh guarded by high ridges connecting the Himalayas and Zanskar range from east to west had made the access the difficult until 1981 the road connecting Kargil was completed. 

  • The valley is provided plenty of water by two tributaries of Zanskar river named Doda and Lungnak.

  • The Zanskar Valley Leh Ladakh receives snowfall for seven months in the year and the Indus valley at that time can be easily accessible through the Zanskar River on foot as the river completely freezes.

  • Zanskar Valley vegetation is of alpine and Tundra species whereas the food corps or fruits are grown in the lower elevation of the valley. The crops cultivated in the area are barley, lentil, potato and apricot.

  • Zanskar is a splendid reserve of wildlife both domestic as well as wild. The animal species includes yak, dzo, sheep, horse, dog, marmot, bear, wolf, snow leopard, kyang, bharal, ibex, wild sheep and goats.

  • The paradise of trekkers comprises of the popular as well as adventurous trekking routes of Padum to Darcha over the Shingo La (5,090m) and Padum to Lamayuru over the Singge La (5,050m). The other remote trekking routes are Padum to Markha Valley over the Cha Cha La (4,950m) and Rubrang La (5,020m) .

  • The best season for trekking at Zanskar valley is between ends of June until October.

  • The climate of this Ladakh valley is pleasant, dry, and warm in summers whereas the winters are extremely long, cold, and harsh.
