Shyok Valley is formed by the River Shyok, Khumdang glacier, the Nubra and Changchenmo Rivers. The streams of the river forming this Ladakh Valley flow towards the western direction to merge into the River Indus. The word Shyok means the river of death the name of the river is assumed from the age old fact of the Central Asian traders who perished on this treacherous routes since centuries. Shyok Valley Ladakh was the ancient trade route from Central Asia to Ladakh and the land where only the fortunate survived.

Some Facts & Information of Shyok Valley :-

  • The River Shyok freezes in the winter to form an easy passage through between the Khaplu and the Nubra valleys whereas in the summer the freezing Shyok River melts compelling people to cross the route on rafts or inflated skins.

  • This valley in Ladakh has abundant fertile soil where farmers grow rich in quality as well as plenty of fruits such as apricot, apple, mulberry and walnut .

  • The Shyok Valley village Temisgam is the richest reserve of fruits and nuts in Ladakh. On the other hand the village of Khalsar is full of festivals, fairs, and carnivals throughout the year.

  • The Shyok Valley Leh Ladakh is well connected through Leh through Digar La pass (6,00m) and stays open for longer time in comparison to the Khardung La.

  • The best time to visit the Shyok Valley is between months of July and September.
