The Shanti Stupa situated at a distance of about 3 Kms west of the Leh bazaar is a white monument of peace. This Ladakh monastery was built in the year 1991 by a Japanese Buddhist named Bhikshu Gyomyo Nakamura. The Shanti Stupa Ladakh was founded in order to commemorate 2,500 years of Buddhism and to spread the message of peace. The construction of the Shanti Stupa took place in the year April 1983 and took 8 years to complete.

The Shanti Stupa Leh Ladakh is famed for the relics of the Buddha engraved in its base. The statue of the Buddha was inscribed by the 14th Dalai Lama. The Ladakh monastery has turned into a tourist appeal not only due to its spiritual implication but also due to its setting which provides amazing views of the adjacent landscape.  Leh Ladakh Shanti Stupa was constructed as a two-level structure. The primary level attributes the Dharmachakra with deer on each side. The second level comprises of imprints exhibiting the "birth" of Buddha, the Maha Samadhi of Buddha and Buddha "defeating the devils" while meditating.
