Phugtal Gompa is derived from the word Phug meaning cave; hence the Phugtal monastery is a replica of honey comb. The Phugtal Gompa Ladakh a home to about 70 monks is positioned at the opening of a large cave situates at the edge of a cliff above the Tsarap River. The Phugtal is an exceptional trekking route starting from Padum via Bardan, Mune and Char through the valley’s right side of the Tserap Lingti Chu, one reaches this Ladakh Monastery. The trekking route takes three days to reach the Phuktal Gompa hidden in a cave.

Phuktal established in the mid 15 century follows the preaching of the reformed Gelukpa sect. The monastery is a splendid abode to about 60 Yellow Hat Monks. The lower part of the Phugtal Gompa lays the monks, village with the Nyingpa Lakhang. The cave comprises of the Chorten with the remnants of Shesreb Zangpo. The remains are covered by a number of layers of lime paint.
