Lamayuru Monastery

Tibetan buddhist gompa in ladakh
Lamayuru Monastery is the oldest of significant Gompas positioned on or near the Indus River in the Ladakh valley. The ancient scripts state this Ladakh Monastery as the holy place for the pre-Buddhist religious conviction known as Bon. The Lamayuru Monastery Ladakh built in the 10th century is also known as Yung-Drung or Swastika in Ladakh. The foremost as well as splendiferous backdrop of the Lamayuru Monastery is placed at a distance of about 125 Kms from the west of Leh.

The Ladakh Monastery was founded in the 10th century with visit of Mahasiddha Naropa to Ladakh who commissioned the construction of many Stupas, Vihars, temples, and resting place. The initiation was followed by Rinchen Zangpo the translator who completed the numerous temples and Stupas. These lead to the teaching of the Kadampa School to flourish amidst the natives of region. The Yuru Kabgyat festival is held on the 28th and 29th days of the 2nd Tibetan Lunar month every year at the Lamayuru monastery.
