Leh Ladakh People & Culture

The physical structure of people and their culture has much impact from the regional formation. Hence every region has distinctive physique, lifestyles, and cultures giving them a unique identity of representing the destination. Ladakh being a high altitude region with closeness to Tibet and Central Asia makes the Ladakh people physique, clothing style, and lifestyles similar to the natives of Tibet & Central Asia. The Ladakhis people are predominantly followers of Buddhism and practice Mahayana Buddhism. However the region is inhabited with Buddhist, and Muslims. The Ladakh culture is a colorful combination of cheerful natives, women folks, traditional rituals, ceremonies, weddings, leisure activities, astrologers, oracles, and inheritance rules.

It is also evident that Buddhism spread across India from Tibet via Ladakh. The Buddhist dominates the entire regions of Ladakh even in areas of Drass and lower Suru valley where Muslim population dominates Buddhist culture can be witnessed.

Islamic Followers & Inhabitants  : - Leh Ladakh culture gets modified from Buddhist cultures to Islamic cultures in the areas of Kargil, Drass, and lower Suru Valley. The ‘Chortens’ & “Mani” walls are replaced in these areas by Islamic religious buildings, mosques, and imambaras in complimentary to the regions religious belief. The Islam is spread in these areas and most of the people living in these areas are followers of Islam.

Traditions & Lifestyles of People : -The traditions of land are deeply impacted by the religious beliefs, occupation, and rituals followed since time immemorial. The Ladakh people are mostly agriculturists and follows Buddhism. Ladakh lifestyles are mostly inspired by Tibetan lifestyles even the food is similar to the Tibetan cuisines. However with the impact of Ladakh being mingling with Indian plains the foods from the plains are also getting popular among the natives.

Ceremonies & Wedding Celebrations : - Ceremonies have special place in Ladakh and are celebrated with grand pomp,

show, and joy. Musical symphonies with beatings of drums are common way to mark the rejoicings in Ladakh. Wedding is celebrated with great festive spirit with music, dance, joy, and laughter in Ladakh culture. The wedding celebration is commenced for two days on the first day the rituals of marriage is completed with feasting at the bride’s house. In the second day the groom’s family hosts a party for the bride’s family. The groom gifts the bride gold jewelry and clothes, whereas the girl’s family gives the couple clothes, animals and land if they are rich. These gifts are known as a "Raqtqaq" or dowry.

Leisure Activities : - The Ladakh culture tours also include of leisure activities and are much sought after by adventure travelers as a part of leisure. The two favorite leisure activities of Ladakh are polo and archery. The archery festival is held every summer season and is celebrated with frolicsome fanfare whereas the polo in Ladakh are no meant for the rich exclusively in-fact every villages have their own polo ground and played as weekend leisure.
